(for Conservatories of Music and Science Universities):
“Musica est exercitium arithmeticae occultum nescientis se numerare animi”, that is “Music is a hidden arithmetic exercise of the soul, which does not know that it is counting”: so Leibniz wrote, perhaps thinking of the Pythagorean idea that the secret of harmony is in the magic power of numbers.
By studying sound waves, the reasons behind the concepts of consonance and
dissonance, the physics of the musical instruments and musical examples at the piano, the lecture shows the links between two branches of knowledge which have always been considered distant and yet wonderfully close.
Music, or mathematics for the ears.
